Our volunteers return to service at the Caritas canteen

Our volunteers have resumed their service at the canteen of the Diocesan Caritas of Foligno. With all the precautions and devices to prepare meals safely Mirko, Victor and Gabriele, three of our 34 volunteers, have enthusiastically started to prepare delicious dishes!

"It was nice to come back and do something together to help others" Mirko told us. The need to receive a hot meal in recent months has certainly not diminished: the Caritas canteen has continued to guarantee the service with take-away meals. Compared to the usual 40 meals a day, now 60 people are knocking on Caritas' door every day, an increase dictated by the social and economic consequences of the pandemic.

Victor, one of the "veteran” volunteers, couldn't wait to start again: "It was really nice even if it was more demanding. Even if the guests were not there, we still prepared lunch and dinner to be delivered to homes".

Doing canteen service once a month is an indispensable gesture for those who are most in difficulty. For each of them, this is an emotional activity and a moment to think about what’s important. Gabriele wrote in an email: "It is difficult to accept that today, where abundance and excess reign, there are still people in difficulty. It would take very little to equalize things, to give everyone a small part of our abundance" and you can also grasp the words Mirko who told us: “When you are there you realize how lucky you are on our side of the kitchen. It’s sad to think about how many people turn to Caritas to eat. Everyone may have to ask for help".

Cooking, collaborating, serving, is a team effort that is even more pleasant thanks to the beautiful relationships that are created between the volunteers. Gabriele's words shine a light on the authentic happiness in giving oneself: “I do this not only as a commitment to help others but I get great pleasure in doing this together with wonderful groups like the Valter Baldaccini Foundation and Caritas of Foligno. Thanks for being part of it”.

We would like to thank you and all the volunteers for your heart-felt commitment in serving others. You are unique!
