Antoneta, Ismet, and little Jelena, aged 15, 9, and 6, are three siblings who grew up in an extremely fragile family situation. Their home had no floor: only layers of clothes and objects piled up covering the broken concrete. Both parents, suffering from severe psychiatric disorders, were unable to care for them: their mother alternated moments of affection with outbursts of violence, and their father rummaged through the garbage for small objects to give to his children just to see them smile, but he was unable to provide them with real care.
Years of violence, neglect, and chaos profoundly affected their childhood: the three siblings learned to survive without guidance, without a routine, without anyone to help them understand what was happening around them. When even their aunt, who was trying to care for them, could no longer bear the burden, Antoneta, Ismet, and Jelena were taken in by the Leskoc Home.
At first, socializing was impossible: none of the three could communicate their needs or emotions.
Antoneta had never attended school regularly and could neither read nor write. Jelena, the youngest, reacted to every frustration with tears and outbursts of anger, unable to express what she felt. Ismet, sweet and kind, was severely limited by a significant cognitive challenge.
Today, thanks to the slow and consistent work of the educators and staff, their progress is evident. Antoneta is undergoing psychotherapy and is slowly starting to open up: she looks others in the eye, participates in activities, and tries to share her experiences. Jelena is more relaxed, plays with the other children, and is beginning to build relationships and trust. Ismet, supported by a special education teacher, approaches school with enthusiasm: for him, every small achievement is a great victory.
These siblings' difficulties haven't disappeared, but for the first time in their lives, they are no longer alone. At the Leskoc Home, they've found a place where someone awaits them, listens to them, and cares for them every day.
