The story of Adi and her family is one that makes you reflect on how people can adapt and survive in unthinkable situations.
Adi is only 12 years old and the eldest of nine siblings. Her mother, nearly blind and severely obese, married at a young age. Her authoritarian and violent father had a profound impact on family life and now lives far away.
The house they live in is in dire conditions: broken windows, knives left lying around, doors broken down, fighting dogs in the yard. The children were constantly at risk of injury or getting caught up in their parents' arguments. In this chaos, Adi soon found herself caring for her younger brothers and sisters: she lit the stove, chopped wood, washed the children, and did whatever she could to help them survive.
Adi, along with some of her brothers and sisters, began visiting the Leskoc Home every afternoon. During the day, the staff at the Home welcome about fifteen boys and girls living in extremely vulnerable conditions. In the Home, they find a refuge where they can play, wash, eat a hot meal, and be listened to.
At a certain point, this afternoon welcome had to be interrupted: scabies, a highly contagious skin disease that affected the entire family, broke out in Adi's home.
For a whole year, Adi and the children were unable to attend the Leskoc Home, but the staff never abandoned them: every day they brought food and medicine and tried to restore a minimum level of hygiene and safety to the environment.
When the scabies was finally eradicated, the children began attending the Home again.
Even for those not directly welcomed, the Leskoc Home represents a haven. Just a few days ago, one of the brothers was saved after being rushed to the hospital by staff for untreated appendicitis.
For Adi and his family, the Leskoc Home is a fundamental point of reference and support. This Christmas, give even those who don't live there the opportunity to receive help and support. DONATE NOW
