The end of a family’s journey

“With the families” is witness to many beginnings, but also of conclusions.

Over the past four years, the Valter Baldaccini Foundation’s socio-educational project, in collaboration with the Consultorio di Foligno and the La Tenda cooperative, has tried to be "the best possible start" for 25 boys and girls from 22 fragile and vulnerable families in our territory.

Important work has been done with each of these families and the work continues every day. It focuses on the children’s needs and supports parents in the early stages of their child's development and growth. Our educators go to the homes of mothers suffering from postpartum depression, underage mothers who live with their parents, mothers who feel isolated because they are far from their country of origin or who live in a heavy condition of social and economic subordination imposed by their husbands. These women suffer a profound sense of inadequacy and loneliness.

But even families who have the most complex and traumatic experiences have resources. One resource is the Touchpoints method used by our educators during visits which is based on the teachings of the pediatrician Brazelton. It emphasizes "enhancing passion wherever it is, because parenting is a trial and error process”.

Today there are 5 active paths, but the authentic relationships and trust created with the families who have completed their journey in the project have not vanished after leaving the program. After having built a solid relationship together, leaving is not easy. As our educators always say: "it is right to be there in the life of those people as long as they need it, then when you leave it is not the end, but it is the beginning of a new joyous path, because it means that if your presence is no longer necessary. They have acquired autonomy and security and can finally walk on their own legs".

Brazelton teaches us that we are a bit like a scaffolding around a building, a structure to be removed when the renovations are finished and the building has become more beautiful than before.

Becoming a mother is a complex process and the “With the families” project tries to give help to all those children and families in which the challenge is particularly insidious.
