“Everyone says that pregnancy is the happiest time in a woman’s life. I didn’t experience it that way.” For Vanessa, pregnancy was a dark and difficult period. Discovering that she was expecting a child brought to the surface fears, insecurities, and a deep sense of inadequacy. Her story shows just how much the “With the families” project can make a difference for a family facing hardship.
When Mia was born, things became even more complicated. Vanessa felt very alone and incapable. Aware of her own vulnerabilities and supported by Paolo, her partner and Mia’s father, she decided to ask for help. Vanessa turned to the local family counselling centre, where she was welcomed by social worker Francesca, who immediately recognised the many strengths and parenting skills Vanessa possessed. They were simply hidden beneath a period of extreme vulnerability. Francesca told Vanessa about the "With the families” project and the opportunity to be supported by a home-based family educator, Lucia, who could assist her through regular visits at home.
The “With the families” project: a light in the darkness
Asking for help is not easy. Accepting support and welcoming a stranger into your home can be challenging. But Vanessa found the courage to do so, and, as she says, Lucia became a light in her life: “Entering a family’s home is complex because they are opening their world to us, a precious world. That is why we enter gently and respectfully.”
And so, step by step, Lucia’s journey alongside Vanessa, Paolo, and Mia began. Week after week, through highs and lows, moments of joy and discouragement, Vanessa rediscovered herself. She learned to recognise her own abilities and to embrace the love she feels for little Mia: “Lucia stayed with us for an entire year, a year during which she helped me become a mother.”
In this video, Vanessa, Paolo, and Lucia share with honesty and authenticity the emotions they experienced throughout this journey together, and we are deeply grateful to them for doing so.
The “With the families” project is carried out in partnership with the professionals of the Consultorio Subasio Foligno and the Comunità La Tenda cooperative.
Since 2019, more than 50 families facing difficulties have been supported through the project. Participation is entirely voluntary and free of charge. Our hope is to offer this opportunity to even more mothers, fathers, children, and families who need support.
