Two days dedicated to the prevention of thyroid cancer will be held in Foligno, in Piazza San Domenico on October 10 and 11, 2024. The initiative, made possible thanks to the collaboration between the Valter Baldaccini Foundation and the Umbrian delegation of the ANT Foundation, will allow 48 people to access a free visit, which will be carried out by ultrasound, performed by a doctor inside the ANT mobile clinic.
Tumors are the second leading cause of death after cardiovascular diseases. It is estimated that in Italy, over 1,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed every day and, according to the latest data available from the Umbrian Tumor Registry, over 7,000 cases are recorded in Umbria every year.
Prevention is a very important tool and has two main objectives:
Thyroid cancer and ultrasound examination
The thyroid is an endocrine gland located in the front of the neck whose main function is to produce hormones responsible for regulating many functions of the body. Over time, the thyroid can undergo pathological processes, commonly called thyroid nodules, which are often neither visible nor palpable. Through ultrasound examination of the thyroid, it is possible to identify and locate non-palpable nodules and this will allow for timely intervention with further laboratory, instrumental and biopsy tests.
In most cases, non-palpable thyroid nodules are benign, are asymptomatic and only require monitoring over time. About 5% of nodules detected by thyroid ultrasound are malignant tumors. Of all diagnosed tumors, thyroid cancer is relatively rare (1-2% of all malignant tumors) and, thanks to early diagnosis and low mortality rates, over 90% of patients recover with appropriate medical treatments.
The social project of the Valter Baldaccini Foundation with ANT Umbria
For the third consecutive year, the Valter Baldaccini Foundation is promoting two days dedicated to prevention in Foligno, together with ANT in Umbria:
“In Italy, the number of people who give up treatment is increasing – commented our President Beatrice Baldaccini. They do so for various reasons, such as waiting times that are too long or because check-ups are too expensive. Offering the possibility of free access to a medical exam this year too is a gesture that the Valter Baldaccini Foundation is keen to give to its community”.
